Hi Everybody,
My baby boy has just started taking Zantac and hates the taste of it. Are there any tricks to getting a squirmy one month old to take his medication and not spit it out? It smells awful so I can imagine it would taste pretty foul, too.

Thanks

:)

The easiest way I have found to give meds is to put them in a nipple. I think it is far enough in the back of their mouth that they don't have to taste it as much and it comes out at a flow they are used to then. I would say you can try putting it in some formula but you run into the trouble if doesn't drink all of the formula you don't really know how much medication he really got.
Good luck.

I have the same problem with Elise. The Zantac does taste very bad! Taste it! It is horid  ! Try giving only a tiny bit like a drop at a time because it is harder to spit out very small amounts of liquid. Try giving it in the way back of the mouth but not so deep you can't see what you are doing and give it at an angle so you do not choke your baby. Also, sometimes it helps us to lay Elise almost flat with her head only slightly elavated so gravity helps. (If it sounds like your baby is starting to choke/cough sit her/him up right away.) We have trouble with Elise waving her arms and knocking the syringe out of my hand so sometimes we swaddle her to give the Zantac. We do all of these things and sometimes the Zantac still comes back . I hope some of this helps you ;) !

Sincerely,
Numom

I put a little formula in the nipple and then the zantac on top. You can also top it off w/a little formula.

I let her suck it out of the nipple then put it on the bottle

That is what I do to Hope...put it in her bottle nipple mix in a bit of formula with it.

Thanks for all the tips Everyone. I have been doing a few drops at a time in the corner of his mouth and so far we have had good luck. I appreciate all the information. This is more than I got out of the nurses at the pediatrician's office.

This is a great site. It really helps to see that there are other parents going thru the same thing.

Thanks!:)

Good Morning Everyone,
How long does it take for the Zantac to work? The dr is telling me a week but it seems like nothing is happening. Is it the kind of thing where "bingo" the baby feels better or is it a gradual build up and eventually he screams less?

We had a rough weekend. Ian had vomiting bug and we went to the pediatrician, took pedialyte, and now he is finally back to eatting normally but the reflux is BAD. Poor little guy. The onlything that quieted him last night was the vacuum. I think the only reason he sleeps is exhaustion. :sleep5

I have a feeling I am going to be complaining to the dr soon to change his medication.

I hope everyone else is having a better weekend.
Thanks,
Cathy
