My 4-month-old has been on Zantac for reflux for about 6-8 wks. She has an appointment next week for a check up and shots.

Will the pediatrician automatically increase her Zantac based on weight or do I have to ask her to. Nicole has been a little more fussy over the past few days and fussy with some of her feeds. Not really aching her back or screaming in pain like she used to but she seems to be heading back on that road. I think maybe the Zantac might need increased a little.

Another question I had was about the spitting up. She still spits up a LOT!!! Is the Zantac supposed to reduce the amount of spit up or just neutralize the stomach acid? Sometimes it bothers her when she spits up. Other times it don't seem to bother her. What has your experience been? Is the spitting up supposed to decrease with using Zantac? Is there possibly another medication that would be better. Does Prilosec reduce the spitting up? She seems to be gaining weight okay so I know the spitting up at this point is more of an inconvenience than anything.

Thanks a lot. You ladies are always so full of information. Its great to share experiences and suggestions.

~When you go to the ped. The will weigh your baby and increase the dose. If needed.

~Zantac is not to help with the spitting up. Just the stomach acid.
Spitting up will increase more as your baby gets mobile.
*With My baby she throws up all the time*
There are other meds for your baby....Zantac (I my opion) is the mildest form of ant-acid.

Your baby sounds like mine!

Good luck to you.
I hope I helped.

Rachel,

How old is your baby?

I did call the pediatrician today because Nicole was throwing up so much I was getting worried. She increased her Zantac from 1 ml to 1.2 ml and told me to give her some Pedialyte.

I no sooner hung up the phone with her than Nicole started having diarrhea too. I think the drastic increase in the vomiting today was due to her being put on an antibiotic but I did not realize this until the diarrhea set in.

I called the ped. back and she said to still keep the Zantac at the 1.2 ml because she was getting back some of her old reflux type behaviors and to watch the vomiting and diarrhea tomorrow to see if it improves. They decreased the dose of the antibiotic slightly.

Unfortunately, she needs the antibiotic because of some urinary tract issues she has and high risk of infection but obviously if the vomiting and diarrhea don't stop she will have to be taken off it. I hope the poor thing feels better tomorrow. I feel so bad for her. She's only 4 mo. old and has been through more agony than i've been though in my life time.

My baby is 5 months old.

WOW poor baby girl!!
I know how you feel.

I knew at 2 weeks old something was wrong with HOpe...She hated to eat.
She became Colic. We thought that was the problem...it was not.
She was lactose intolerant...but that was not it yet.

After Hope being on 6 different formulas and meds finally the doc realized she has reflux. So Hope has been throwing up more and more. It is cuz she is moving around so much.

How much longer does she have to be on the antibiotic?

Hi there,
Just thought I share my experience. My baby has been on Zantac for just over two days and it just started working last night. Probably too early to tell if there will be any side effects. I'm noticing she's still refluxing into her throat (she's a silent refluxer) but I wanted to tell you that when she was on Losec previously it made the regurgitating/reflux much worse. She wasn't in pain just lots of discomfort because it would stop coming up into her throat and mouth. IT made it so that she could never get to sleep because of it. I've seen a few other posts in other threads that have reported something simliar. But then for some people it works perfectly! Just thought I'd let you know.
