My baby is now 6 weeks old and has all the symptoms of reflux. When she feeds, she fusses and tenses her body, followed up by spit up and and continued crying.

Although she displays these symptoms, my doctor is trying to steer away from any medication. Does medication seem to help any of your babies. A majority of the threads and responses I have been reading state that medications do not work.

I would hope they do so I can get some sleep.

Hi there,
My first question would be, why does your Dr want to steer clear of meds? Seems to me he or she should be eager to do whatever to help your baby.
To answer your question, my daughter was diagnosed with reflux and colic at about three weeks of age. She was put on Reglan and Zantac by her pediatrician. We stayed on that for one week but it was obvious it wasn't helping and the Reglan seemed to be making things worse. She then saw a gastroneurologist who put her on Prilosec and it has made a world of difference!!! After about two days we saw a big change in her. She was more relaxed, could sleep and was not fussing and wanting to be held all of the time. She is now 6 1/2 months old and we have adjusted the dosage just once. The Dr. thinks she will be off of it by 9 months. She is smiling, happy and doing all of the things she should be doing for her age. I had my doubts that this would ever happen. Good luck to you.

Thanks for your quick response. I am so glad that prilosec worked. For whatever reason, the group of doctors that I have been seeing over and over again the past month believe that we should avoid giving Hannah, who is now 6 weeks old, any medications. The explanation is that they believe that giving medications at such a young age should be avoided. Basically, just deal with it.

That is why I am sooo glad that I found this website. I have been continually doing research and several women I know have mentioned medication.

Thus, I guess I will try to be assertive with the doctor to get a medication.

Do you have any recommendations for a baby that seems constipated but has soft poops only 4 to 5 days?

Hi amanda

my pediatrician always told me to treat constipation agreesively espescially when i started thickening the formula for reflux. warm water helps, constipation drops added to formula or brown sugar and water. for the first few months i added the drops to 1 bottle each day to keep my ds regular. he is definately happier when he does one bm a day. good luck

I'm not going to be much help because i am from Australia and they are probably called something different over there. Here they are called coloxyl drops and they are based on 'poloxamer'/ they are specifically for infants. maybe ask your chemist as there should be something of the same equivalent. hope you can find something.

I am not able to help on this but I know that another member on this board is a pharmacist (chemist). Her name is Emily. You may want to send her a private message.

EVERYONE NEEDS TO TRY THE HYLAND'S COLIC TABLETS!!! I have been using them for 2 days now, my baby had all the symptoms, and now she is happy and hasn't cried practically in 2 days.

These tablets are all natural and I am a very happy mom.

Hi there,
I wasn't real wild about giving my daughter meds at such a young age either but she seemed like she was in such pain and discomfort that I tried to make the best decision I could for her. I would ask to see a specialist and see what happens and what input they can give. I was lucky to find a ped. and specialist who had the same philosophy as I do about meds. Give the least amount possible of the most effective medicine with the least side effects. Good luck!
