I worry that all the swaddling has discouraged my son, now 16 weeks, from learning to use his arms better or roll over. He still won't reach for anything, he will grab a toy or blanket if you put it in his hand. He hasn't rolled over, but every now and then he tries. I know everyone says that every baby is different, but I still worry. All he seems to want to do is suck his fingers. It's been a while since I have taken care of a baby and I can't remember at what age they "should" be doing certain things. Someone give me some encouragement please!!
Hey there,
I was concerned about the same thing and asked the gastroneurologist about it at our last visit. My concern was more with dd not wanting to play with anything and not wanting to be on her tummy because of her reflux. He said that usually once the reflux and colic is under control they catch up real quickly if they are falling behind developmentally. He compared it to an adult not wanting to do anything but lay still on the couch when they are ill.
Just for comparison, my dd rolled over for the first time 2 days before her 5 month b-day. My son (not reflux or colicky) did the same on his 4 month bday. However, he has been ahead of the game with everything! I have noticed with dd that as soon as her Prilosec kicked in, around 5 months she was MUCH more interested in everything. She is now rolling all over and will play for 5-10 minutes on her tummy and is starting to push herself up on her elbows. She still cannot sit up on her own yet, which my son was doing at 7 months and I don't see her making that much progress in 2 weeks. She is about 6 1/2 months now. I was very worried because at 4 months was not grabbing toys or reaching for things but now she grabs at everything! The other day I was walking through our laundry room with her on our way out the door and when we got to the car she had grabbed two shirts out of the laundry basket!
I was very concerned about delays but she seems to be doing great now. I do feel that she still may be a little behind but she is catching up fast. Try not to worry--I know easier said than done! Maybe you should talk to your ped. I know mine was very reassuring when I brought it up with her. Any other questions for me-- just ask!I know how you are feeling. I remember writing the same thing in my journal. I just hope she continues to be happy and make progress!

Mom2 -
Thanks. My younger ds is very vocal, he laughs and squeals and yells, but just doesn't want to move a lot.
My first ds (almost 8 now!) was so ahead of all the timelines for development. He walked at 10 mo. But he was an "easy" baby.
I'm sure he will be fine, I just want to hear it from people who have actually gone through it!
