3 days ago we started our 8 week old daughter on Zantac .5 ml 2x a day (she weighs 9 1/2 lbs). It seems as though sometimes when I give it to her she is bothered by it - she cries & is not to fond of the taste. I ahve found that giving it to her in the middle of a feeding seems to help some ( I am breastfeeding). I am wondering if I should continue to give it a few weeks to see if it is really making a difference. She seems to spitting up less for about 1/2 of her feedings. I want some advice. The doctor prescribed it fairly easily but I should have asked more questions about how long it takes to work and what the sideeffects are. Any input would be appreciated. :D

Can you express some milk and give it to her in that (about an ounce)? I give my son his in an ounce of formula and he does not mind at all.

Also, give it about 2 weeks to see any real improvement. As far as I know, there are no major side effects.

Does zantac have to build up in the system to work?
My dd was prescribed 2ml - 2x/day, which after all of the posts that I have read seems like a lot. I sometimes give it to her now but only 1ml once a day. I am not sure if it helps, but I don't give it to her everyday. Maybe I am not helping the situation.

My DD is on 2ml x 2 a day.
Zantac seemed to work for her right away. And if we miss one dose.....she lets us know about it!

for what it is worth Zantac didnt work for us. he seemed to cry more after taking it but more from stomach pains than the reflux. we reduced the dose but still seemed to upset him. once over 6 months we went onto Losec which is a bit annoying because it has to be disolved but much better. apparently if your baby is both reflux and colic then the zantac can make their stomach pains worse.

We stopped the Zantac and things improved. For a week she was doing quite well in terms of her colic and reflux. Since Easter however things have started up again. Not as bas as before but the spitting up has increased and nightime fussiness. Thanks for your responses.:)

you may think that Zantac is not working...but it is!
Zantac is not the strongest med. out there. But it is the one with the lowest side affects.

Thanks, I'm not sure what I am looking for. I didn't know much about the drug, other than it seems to give my baby more pain at times and at other times she is fine. We are now on prevacid and I am not sure if that is working either but hopefully something will work or she will grow out of it someday.

The bad thing about Zantac is it has to be adjusted every time they gain a couple pounds, it seems. Once we increase it, it helps tremendously. I've heard that Prevacid can work better.

thanks honeybunny that was helpful. I think the prevacid is working. Her teachers at daycare keep commenting on how happy she has become. Yeah!

Hey Chele,
Glad to hear things are better! My daughter was on Zantac and it didn't seem to help at all. We did give it (Zantac) two weeks and then went to Prilosec which has worked wonders. Sounds like the Prevacid is your answer--isn't is great to finally see your baby happy!

We started the Zantac up again after a really bad week. This week she has been so happy :angel3 and spitting up so much less. I think that starting the Zantac the same week as her shots was an overload on her poor little system. My only concern is the dosage adjustment. She is 11 1/2 lbs and currently on .5/2x a day. When will I know she needs an adjustment?

Hi there,
The Dr. told us that we would see and notice her old behaviors (fussiness, not being able to sleep, constant motion of hands and feet and seeing her try to swallow back down what was coming up) coming back.I didn't think this was the most scientific way of knowing when her dosage was to be increased (we are using Prilosec) and I was unsure whether I would be able to tell if she was just having a couple of bad days or if her dosage needed to be increased. However, it actually was pretty apparent when she started to get uncomfortable again. The Dr. then increased her dosage by the smallest amount possible and switched her to taking it before dinner instead of in the morning because she was waking again at night and that did the trick. Weird but it worked for us!
I am glad your daughter is feeling so much better!

Mom2, do you have to give prolsic an hour before dinner or just sometime before dinner? My DD is on prevacid and the first time it said an hour before eating which is really hard to do. Making her wait in the morining to eat and at night after picking her up form daycare. She is also on carafate which I am not exactly sure what it is, but it is supposed to help her throat from deteriorating from all the spitting up. They seem to be helping though.

OK so things are a little different here in Australia but i am so impressed because i have just worked out that the Prilosec that everyone talks about is the same as the Losec that we take here. but i have a questions? it only comes in a capsule here that you have to disolve in water. for anyone who uses prilosec, can you please tell me if you also have to use a tablet, what the dose is and how you find trying to disolve it? i think it works so much better than Zantac but disolving the tablet is a bit of a hassle as the granules are hard to get the baby to take.

Hey Supermum, long time no type:D , We are on prevacid which is I think another form of prolisec, we had to go to a special pharmacy that could compound it. Our dr told us which pharmacy could do it. Maybe your doctor might know of one? Big help huh? Sorry.

Hey there,
We give the Prilosec about 30-40 minutes prior to her eating depending on her mood.I have given it to her as early as 20 minutes before she eats. The Dr. told us that 30 minutes is best but at least 10 will work! We also had to find a pharmacy that would compound it into a solution. The first pharmacist that I called told me I could dissolve it myself in a bottle but she will not take a bottle so he told me about the compound solution. I had to call three pharmacies before I could find one that would agree to do it. Evidently it is rather expensive and the pharmacies do not feel that they get full compensation from the insurance companies. One guy told me "It takes too much of my time""!!!!!He would have been in big trouble if I could have fit through the phone!!!
Anyhow, hope everyone is doing well. Sophie has been giving me a run again for the last two days. Her tummy is real upset. I can't give her any yellow vegetables and now it seems like the green beans and peas she has been eating for weeks are starting to bother her. Any suggestions or similar problems?! Gotta go!

Chele & mom2

thanks for the info. never heard of that here. i have been trying to get him to take the dissolved tablet in water but the granules stay in the syringe. i dont think they convert it here but i will ask around. it works sooo much better than zantac even if he isnt getting a full dose. but i was never told to give it before a meal? isnt that wierd. we just give 1/2 tablet once a day....

I am reading most of the posts in regards to Zantac and shaking my head so sadly! I have a story about my (currently) 5 month old son - Nicholas. When he was born he was 8lbs 15oz 22inches - a very happy and healthy baby! all of a sudden after 2 weeks home with him he stopped breastfeeding for (what seemed) no reason! he would only nurse for a total of 5mins on both breasts!!! he screamed all day and night. I constantly called lactation nurses, doctors (3 of them in my clinic), friends, family, and doctor's nurses - most told me - he is fine all babies cry! - no one could figure out why he wouldn't eat and it seemed because he was having wet diapers and pooping that he was fine. one doc said "is he throwing up?" no I said- just won't eat. It was always "well if he is gaining weight and having dirty diapers then he must be fine". No one overlooked the fact that my little baby was screaming all day and night driving my husband and I insane and freaked out

my aunt suggested Levsin - she thought maybe its gas. I didn't think so but I asked both doctors anyway. both told me no way! the one said she didn't feel comfortable prescribing that because of the side effects. she did say "well lets try Zantac - sometimes that settles the stomach and maybe that will help" Well it did!! For awhile that is!

it was soooo hard for my baby to take the medication - it smelled yucky and he would not take it. I asked the pharmacy to please flavor it and they said "well it smells so bad because of the alcohol" I was shocked "ALCOHOL" in medication for a 2 month old baby???? she advised me that they could make it with out the alcohol and I felt much much much better! for about, i don't know, maybe almost a month Nicholas seemed like a new baby! He was eating and stopped screaming!

My husband and I were in heaven again! I did much research about Acid Reflux and my son had a, not so obvious, symptom - not eating. None of the doctors picked that up - i wonder how they are doctors sometimes!!! anyway, they didn't think he had this because he didn't throw up at all but remember i said HE WASN'T EATING! so, what ever will you throw up when you have nothing in your little tummy! I also stopped breastfeeding because that is what the doctor suggested - what a fool I am!!!! First time mom! what did I know! Before I knew what was wrong with him I assumed it was my milk that bothered him. I put him on Good Start Milk-based formula combined with the Zantac - everything was perfect.

All of a sudden he started screaming again - he would raise his legs to his chest and screaming, long story short - against my doctors advice (such idiots these people are!) i switched to a soy-based formula (after trying 12 other formulas!) i realized the milk formula gave him some sort of reaction - the doctors disagreed. after doing research i found it to be common that babies with acid reflux sometimes also have a milk allergy.

everything was fine again for just a short time. i told the doctor he was getting worse again and i didn't understand what the heck was going on!! she increased the dose assuming he was getting bigger and needing more Zantac. he would scream, not let me put him down, and especially not sleep - which i thought was totally abnormal - he only sleept for 8 hours a day and night! the doctor said i need to get him to eat more and put him on a schedule if i wanted him to sleep longer. my mom said "why does he fight sleep" - yeah really i thought - why does my little 4 month old baby not want to sleep.

well by pure chance i stopped giving my son his Zantac. the first night he slept 8 hours straight!!!! the next day he acted so calm and quiet - usually he fusses and moves around - almost as if he is crawling out of his skin. by the way, did i mention the car - he screamed from the moment you put in the car to the moment you take him out - there was nothing calming in a car ride for this poor child. well anyway, i called the pharmacist and asked "can you tell me what the side effects for Zantac are?" the first one she mentioned was INSOMNIA! Gee, that is a pretty scary side effect for a little baby! The next ones were - headache, vertigo, upset stomach, dizziness, somnolence, agitation, and depression. And that is just to name a few.... check out this website for a whole list of about, i don't know, maybe 30 side effects. http://www.rxlist.com/cgi/generic/ranit_ad.htm

my son immediatly improved and i tossed that bottle of Zantac out so fast it would make your head spin! you know i asked the pharmacy in the beginning of all this and they said "oh no major side effects really". now i don't think side effects are always common but if you remember i said i had the alcohol removed - the Zantac was compounded - made differently. i thought it would be better for him without the alcohol - not realizing it might cause all these other side effects. unfortunetly my son's acid reflux is still apperent - he eats good but spits up and doesn't sleep well. the doctor prescribed me Previcd but i am scared to give it to him. i heard somethings about Liquid Calcium but am also scared to give it to him.

i feel sooooo guilty about poisening my son, that is what i was doing everytime i gave him his Zantac - 2x's a day - am and pm 1.5ml. for 3 months. i feel his liver and kindneys will be permently some how effected. i don't know. my husband and i really began to think this was just how are son was. oh, and ever since we stopped the Zantac he stopped crying in the car! the headaches, upset tummy, imsomnia, and vertigo were probably making my baby scream all day long and not one doctor i talked with knew about these side effects.

so, the reason i am telling you this very, very, very long and drawn out story is because if i can help one parent out there in anyway by informing them a little better - helping them arm themselves with more information about acid reflux and Zantac - helping a baby get off that garbage - then my job is done! don't get me wrong, the Zantac did help my child in the beginning - he did start eating again after he was put on it but the side effects were worse than the reflux!!!

so my suggestions for parents that might be going thru what we are and were going thru is as follows:

1. demand your doctor listen to you - they hear you but do they really hear you??!
2. research your butt off - understand the medicine you are giving your kid - know the side effects so you know what to look for in case they act funny
3. listen to your gut - if it doesn't feel right then it probably isn't
4. everyone kept telling me - "babies cry - that is what they do" correction: babies fuss - that is what they do, babies scream and cry when there is something wrong - that is there way of saying - "hey mom and dad - something is hurting me - help me!"
5. understand what it is your child has - in my case it is acid reflux - i know more than our doctors about this problem - you need to arm yourself in every way because the doctors can and sometimes will blow you off.
6. try to keep your cool - its hard and sometimes it can be depressing but babies don't know any other way to tell you they don't feel good.

This whole situation - because of a little acid reflux and bad side effects - has caused tons of friction in my marriage, me to have to quit my job, utter and total chaos in our household, and pure unhappiness by every member in the house.

i hoped this info helped you are can help someone you know! thanks - Jen, Joe and Nicholas!

i hoped this info helped you are can help someone you know! thanks - Jen, Joe and Nicholas!
Thank you so much for sharing your story. It's as if I am reading my own. Right now I'm going nuts with the Zantac and my gut is telling me that my 6 wk old is having side effects that are making him terribly, terribly, terribly uncomfortable. Your story is much like mine with the 8 hrs of sleep in a 24 hr period, the constant and inconsolable crying, etc... Our house as well is shaken by this. I have two older kids, 8 and 5 and they can't sleep w/ the loud and blood curdling screams. The Drs. only guess and they are quick to medicate and aren't really hearing my concerns. They nod their heads but don't really listen. They say that what I am explaining isn't a side effect and that they've never heard of it. Thank you for sharing your story! I don't feel so alone anymore, I feel heard, and I feel like there is a light at the end of this tunnel.

Thanks for sharing your story. Unfortunately, I also understand the stress reflux can cause in a family (please refer to my post [My Colicky Baby is Finally SLEEPING!] )

After months of searching and not finding answers, I took my 6month old, Jackson, to a chiropractor. He has been sleeping MUCH better for about two and a half weeks, now.

Of all the things I've researched, I have never strongly considered the side effects of his medicine (Zantac, then prilosec). He still has rough nights... could be teething, could be something else.

I have recently considered headaches... I suffer from terrible migraine headaches... what's to say that my baby isn't as well? Has anyone heard of research done on infants having headaches?

Thanks and God Bless,
Sarah
