I dont know if this will work for anyone else.. but......a couple weeks ago i stopped mixing jonnys zantac with his milk and started giving it to him straight.. and he is a new baby now!!.........jonny has settled down!!!!!! he just turned 2 months today ..... and had a rough one because of the doctor visit.......but other than that....he has been sleeping up to 7 hours straight in the night and then another 3 or 4 after that!!!!!!!! Its so weird......because I finally got a referral to see a GI doc and I am going to cancel it.......and now it seems the zantac is finally working the way it should be.....and things are progressing nicely.........jonny laughed in the doctors office today....(before the shots) he made the cutest noises.......AAAAAAAAAWWWWWWWWWWWWW also he will go in his swing now.... he never let me put him down before!
i think before i was also over-feeding him.........i reduced his bottle to 3 oz from 4 oz per 3 to 4 hours...

Just curious...how long has your son been on the Zantac? Ian has been on it almost a week and I can already see an improvement. He has been sleeping 6 hours at night, eats at about 3am and sleeps until 6 or 7. Why do you think not mixing it with the formula helped? I have been mixing it with 1 oz. of formula, then give him the remainder of the meal after that.

That is puzzling. It doesn't seem like that would make a difference. We also did it the way Amanda described and didn't have any trouble. I wonder if it may just be a sign that your baby is beginning to grow out of his reflux? Wouldn't that be wonderful! :)

No matter what's behind it, I'm glad to hear you're getting to enjoy your little guy so much now! :angel5

Edited to add: I wonder if you really want to cancel that GI appointment. Babies go through ups and downs with this stuff, and if you run into more problems down the road, it might be easier to get a return visit than it is to get that initial consultation set up. You might want to just talk to somebody in their office and see what they recommend.

you know..........it may have just been a freak coincidence.. he has been on zantac since he was 4 weeks old.......he is 2 months now.........and regarding the growing out of reflux.......hehe i tried 3 times over the weeekend to not give him his zantac so I can see for myself if he truly has reflux........I dont know why I need to test it......i know he does.....anyway.....all 3 times ended up in uncontrollable cying fits 30 minutes after his bottle... so I know know for sure.. that he needs the zantac and he has reflux.

Carol,

I haven't cancelled the appointment yet.........but it isnt until May 22nd .....that was the soonest...and the referral made 3 weeks ago....can you believe it???

Yup, I believe it! That's why I thought it wouldn't be such a good idea to cancel it. Those first appointments take forever to get, but it seems like once you're an existing patient it doesn't take as long for some reason. If I were you, I'd just leave it standing. Specially since it's 2 months away. If he's still doing great at that point then cancel it, but this way if he starts backsliding or outgrows his meds or whatever, at least you won't have to start over again. :)

Hi,
Good sight! At what point did your Dr. give the babies meds?
Our Dr. says there isnt anything for colic.

thanks, jenni:;)

Hi Jenni,

Our pediatrician prescribed Levsin for Thomas when he was just 5 weeks old. Of course I was too afraid to give it to him! :D Levsin (hyoscyamine) is an antispasmodic and may or may not help some babies with colic. I think it depends on what's really wrong with your baby. I've heard so many different definitions of colic now that I don't know which one's right. Maybe they all are. But anyway, if your baby is crying because of gas pains and intestinal spasms then Levsin might help. If it's because of overstimulation, then it probably won't. If your baby has reflux (which is often misdiagnosed as colic), then there are most definitely medications that can help. It sometimes takes some time to find the right one and the right dosage. There are a couple of posts here that list reflux symptoms.

Welcome to the board and I hope your baby is doing better real soon. :)

Johnny Mommy: KEEP THE APPOINTMENT!!!It took me one month to get in to see the gi. Its better to be on the safe side and at least describe what the symptoms have been-and like the other ladies said, its easier to get a follow up. I kept my appt as preventative and I needed it at that time.
