Thanks for the supportive note. We had another bout of colic tonight, but it wasn't nearly as bad as the first. We did a lot of holding and rocking and got through it a little easier. My question is this. My doctor is wanting to put my baby on reglan (he is already on Zantac). I have read some disturbing things about reglan like it makes your baby even fussier. Does anyone have an opinion on this? Thanks!

Yes, my baby spits up, not tons , but pretty consistently. My older son had reflux so bad that it eroded his esophagus. We had a very rocky first 6 months with him. I'm trying to prevent this from happening with this third one.

Hi Tami

I am sorry your littloe one is going thru this..i know, my son was terrible...but once the colic ended , he spit till 18months and still has bouts with reflux at almost 3yrs old..I am a pusher of the medicine Prilosec for infants with reflux...my daughter is on it and once i put her on it..she had hardly any spit up and seemed a little more comfortable..the zantac did nothing for her spitting up..but as your baby has, my daughter has more of the silent reflux where it comes up and burns and alot of the time it does not come out..it may be worth..mentioning the prilosec to your dr....i hope this helps and good luck..

Hi Tami (Love the way you spell your name!!:puh )
My little Levi was also on Zantac and Reglan at the same time...they did this for a period of about one month in order to catch up with the reflux because his esophogus was so eroded and painful....I read all the side effects of it before I started him on it but decided that I was going to try it and he had no ill affects from it. My doc said to watch for any unusual "shakiness" or "tremors" right away when baby is started on it and if you don't see any of those then you shouldn't have any problems...so that may help...
So sorry that you are going thru Reflux again...I can't imagine going thru it twice!!! I swear that Levi should have been the GERD poster boy he was so awful with it but I attribute a lot of that to not catching it in time too..... have you tried Maalox?? I really feel that that was a lifesaver for us also....sending you lots of good and happy thoughts for peaceful moments! Hopefully you have caught this early enough that you will get it ended before it has a chance to start!!

Love and God's Blessings! :angel2

I mentioned using Prilosec to my doctor and he said he never prescribes it for infants. Do you know where I could get more info on this medicine? Also, my baby seems so tense, like he cannot relax. He is always groaning and grunting and then usually starts crying. Is this reflux or colic or do I have just an unordinary baby? THanks for your input. Tami

Hi Tami,
Has your son had a rectal examination to check for a tightness or membrane in the anal canal?
This is the most common cause of "constipative colic" (decreased frequency of stooling, fussing after feedings, crying, pulling legs up onto abdomen, turning red in the face, grunting like he is constipated, etc.) and is both detected/diagnosed and cured by a simple digital rectal examination by your doctor.
The medications may not be needed if this partial obstruction is relieved by the digital rectal examination (which should be part of the complete physical given to colicky babies).
Rectal tightness and partial blockade (gas and more-liquid stool can get through but the more solid stool backs up and can ultimately lead to reflux up the esophagus) are a remnant of gestational development between the 5th and 8th weeks after conception and are randomly distributed among babies. You can check this in standard embryologic textbooks if you wish.
At any rate, have your physician perform a rectal examination to check for "tightness." Any degree of tightness is abnormal, and constipative colic comes in mild, moderate and severe degrees of tightness and/or presence of a residual partial membrane. That is why there are so many individual "expressions" of colic among different babies.
Let us know what happens.
If the rectal exam is normal, your son doesn't have "constipative colic" but some other form of "children in pain syndrome," as Dr. Bill Sears likes to say.
There is more information on our thread under "Tips."

Hi Tami

Yes, I had the same problem with the medicine.. I was very persistent though and made my dr. give me a referall to a pediatric gi specialist, since i had gone thru this with my son, i knew what to do...they gave me the medicine with no problem and within days, Liz was spitting much less..it is a time release med, so getting the proper dose and making sure it is properly administerd is the key..we take the liquid form which is the worst tasting thing i have ever tasted, i put it in her bottle...i usually split the dose for 2 bottles since she cant handle the whole dose at one time..it even makes the bottle taste terrible..but it does work..there is also the time release capsule form and alot of other mothers empty 1/2 the capsule[depending on the dose] into the babies food and that works wonders for them....i really believe it works for the babies...she had no side effects from it..except the taste and i just dont give it to her straight because she will throw it up....also, if you go to www.babycenter.com..and go to the bulletin boards...there is a great sight on there for reflux...and different thoughts..meds and treatments...i think it may give you more info on the prilosec..but definitley, please push for that med...do whatever you need to ...I am not saying all the fussiness will go away, if it is colic it will take it sweet old time unfortunately...but the prilosec will give you peace of mind that the baby is not in pain due to the reflux....Best of luck and feel free to email me or via this post if you have any other questions...

Hi Tami
My son was on Zantac and Reglan and he became more restless. I however do not think he has reflux, so I took him off the meds. I think anything is worth trying to get your baby comfortable.
My son also does the grunting and groaning thing and is terribly restless and has the worst time trying to sleep. He does not have that predictable night time colic, it is different every day.
Hang in there and email at annbode@earthlink.net. We can all use friends right now!
