I am a first time mother and I have a 3 month old son. He was born with club feet and for the first 8-9 weeks, he had serial casting on both of his feet. We would go once/week to the dr to have his casts switched. Then at 10 weeks, he had a tendon lengthening surgery. It seems to me that my baby is fussing/crying 90% of the time. At first, I chalked things up to his casts being uncomfortable, but now I can't help but think that that isn't the only reason he was fussing. He now has to wear orthopedic shoes 23 hours/day. I was off work for 12 weeks with him and I was ready to go back last week. I felt guilty for wanting to go back to work, partially to get away from him for a few hours/day. I'm only working 3 days/week and that does help some, but even on the days that I'm working, I don't always feel excited to go pick him up from the sitters, because I know that he is going to just fuss the rest of the night until he goes to bed around 10-11PM. I tried switching formulas to a soy formula and that did help his bowels, but that was about it. It really didn't cut down on his fussiness. Is it normal for a baby to fuss all the time like this? I can sometimes satisfy him by holding him and bouncing him in my arms, but not always. I cannot lay him down to play because he will cry after 5 minutes. He is only satisfied in the swing if he is sleeping.
Could he possibly be colicky? I keep reading that anything more than 3 hours/day of crying is considered colic....is that 3 consecutive hours or 3 cumulative hours/day?
