We have a 5 week old boy who is bottlefeeding on similac adv. He seems to do fine with his feedings - chugs it! Eats 4-5 oz. every 3 hours and I swear he wants more. hiccups at least once or twice daily. He starts this fussy period every night - usually after 10 PM. - it is consolable for short periods - usually lasts about 1-2 hours. It is difficult to get him down to bed every night. Of course he sleeps fine every other time. He does seem to have to constantly clear his throat - at least that sounds like what he is doing. Very rarely spits up. This fussiness is so routine almost same time every night.
Would love your input. I don't think he is colicky? vs. reflux or just his fussy time?
Thank you!
Teresa
He might be refluxing a little bit, the hiccups can be a sign of that, as can the chugging of formula, but I don't think it's anything to be concerned about or even treat at this point.
The crying at bedtime sounds like it's just his fussy time to me, a friend of mine had a baby last year and she was exactly the same way for the first couple months. If he was having reflux pain he would likely be having more trouble sleeping and more pain through out the rest of the day as well than you are describing.
It wouldn't hurt to bring up the issue at his next check up and definitely if he gets worse then see the doctor for sure. For now I would probably not do anything more than trying some of the lifestyle modifications for reflux (just in case) at bedtime though and see if that helps any. Eg. Keep him upright, avoid anything that is too tight around his belly, try not to feed him too much just b/f bed, perhaps thickening his feeds, although this is something to ask the doctor about before doing.
Hope that helps!

Hi! Your baby sounds almost exactly like my Will at that age. He was breastfed for 2 weeks until I had complications and had to quit. He started out on Similac Adv but was having uncomfortable gas on it. Usually the sametime every night it would hit him. And it would last for 2-3 hours straight. We tried Isomil Soy Formula and he was puking everything he ate on that. His doctor suggested Nutramagin and it has been a life saver. His gas and colicky times quit almost immediately. There was a short adjustment time of a few days first but then it came to an end. He still has some gas here and there but nothing horrible. He does have reflux but is taking medicines for that. And that has nothing to do with his formula. With reflux it doesn't matter what they drink, its coming up. Will also did the constant gulping like he was trying to clear his throat and swallow something. Maybe talk to your pediatrician and see what they suggest. Nutramagin is alittle pricey but I would suggest it to anyone. I pay about $7.47 at Walmart for a 32 oz ready to feed can. Good Luck!
