Hello everyone,
My name is Heidi. I am new here. I wish I would have found this forum a long time ago!
I have a 9 1/2 month old son with reflux. I have had feeding problems with him pretty much since the day I brought him home from the hospital. He was born 4 weeks early (preeclampsia) and was 5lbs 12 ounces when he came home from the hosp. He spits and vomits ALL the time and for the first 5 months of his life he was extremely fussy. He was diagnosed with acid reflux at about 10 weeks old. (poor lil boy.. :( )
My question is about his weight gain. He is now a pretty happy and extremely active baby. He gets around great. He crawls and pulls himself up, walks along the furniture and has recently started trying to stand without holding on to anything. He also babbles and giggles all the time. But his weight gain is beginning to concern me. When he was 8 weeks old he was in the 50% then at his next exam he was in the 25% then he dropped again to the 10% at his 6 month exam and now at his 9 month he is down to the 5%. I have talked to some other people and I get conflicting opinions as to whether to be concerned or not so I thought I would ask some people who have experience with reflux children.
He is gaining just very slowly. He is now 18lbs 4oz. Is that good weight gain for a reflux baby? He has gained 13.2 lbs since he came home from the hosp. His ped. is not concerned.
Thank you so very much for any and all help you can give me. I really appreciate it.
Have a nice week all. I am so sorry this message is so long..
Heidi
p.s. edited to add that he is been being treated with Zantac

Dear Heidi

Considering that your precious one was born premature and is now over 18 pounds, that is actually a very good weight for his age.

His weight gain sounds very much the same as my DS. My DS was born much heavier at 7.5 pounds (full term) and he weighed just over 19 pounds when he was 12 months! That is why your ped is not concerned about this.

Your son seems to be eating well now and putting on decent weight. You definitely don't have to worry about this for now.

He's too cute! He looks like like my brother when he was younger!

Anyway, I agree, that weight sounds perfectly fine for his age to me. My daughter was 13 lbs at nine months (7lbs at birth, she's almost 4 now and only 25lbs).

I would just watch the percentiles, if they continue to drop perhaps consulting a dietician and tracking his calorie intake might be something to think about. Again though, I wouldn't worry about it at this point.

Hi! Your boy is a cutie pie! I can't wait until Will gets to be that age.

I think the weight gain sounds good considering he was small at birth. If your pediatrician isn't too concerned I wouldn't be either. It's discouraging to me that he still has reflux. My Will is only 4 months old and I was hoping we wouldn't have that long of a road ahead of us. Will was 9lbs1oz at birth and at 4 months old weighs 16lbs8oz. He definately doesn't have the weight gain of a reflux baby. He has been gaining excellent. He takes Zantac and Reglan and they seem to be helping. He has the occasional bad day and a mouthful here and there that come up but other then that he is doing fine. It could be alot worse.
