Hello,
Wow, I haven't visited this board in soooooo long. I am a 'veteran' reflux mom and this site was my absolute savior. I am telling you.
My daughter "Sarah" born 9/11/02 was extremely colicky and after a long 5 months was eventually diagnosed with reflux. I had a really hard time with the doctor, as they kept on telling me that it was colic and that it would end and three months, then four months and then they told me it could last as long as six months. I was ready to loose my mind. All of her waking hours were mostly full of crying. And not just mild crying, screaming, kicking, arching etc. etc. etc. She spit up ALOT, like I had to change her outfit at least 3, 4, 5 even 6 times a day. Laundry nightmare! She loved her bottles, and would suck them back so fast and cry for more. She really wanted a never ending bottle. And beause she was gaining weight they wrote it off as colic but I knew it was more than that. She did not sleep very well during the day, I would spend a great amount of time swaddling, shhhhing, white noise, and soother trying to get her to sleep and she would sleep a whole ten minutes and I would ahve to go through it again. It was sooooo hard. But the one good thing was she slept great at night because she got hardly any sleep during the day. Therefore she would crash from exhuastion. But at the time I would have put up with the nightime feedings to have a little peace during the day because I had none.
I finally got my mom to come with me to her check up at 4 months and once again labelled as colic. But again I knew it was more and I was at my wits end. My Mom told the doctor that I was ready for a nervous breakdown and this baby cries way more than a colic baby and we needled some help. We waited a month and went to the pediatrician (longest month of my life). The ped. very quickly diagnosed her with reflux without me even mentioning the word. She watched how Sarah arched her back and asked me how long it took her to finish a bottle, how much she drank, how much she slept etc. etc. etc. All pointed to reflux.
She put her on Zantac, and asked me to thicken her bottles with rice cereal and extend her feedings from 3 to 4 hours. What a difference. She was sooo much better. She was far from your perfectly contented baby but she started sleeping during the day and getting on a schedule!!!!! And cried way less then she did.
IT WAS REFLUX ALL ALONG - NOT COLIC!!!!!!
it wasn't until she was 6-7 months old that we finally got some relief. Pretty bad that she had to suffer all that time eh.
She was on Zantac until she was one year old. But she was behind on alot because of her reflux. She hated lying on the floor or lying on her tummy. Everything had to be in an upright position. I raised her crib mattress. She did not sit until she was 7-8 months old. Did not crawl until 11 months and did not walk until just 3 weeks ago.
But I do have a beautiful almost 16 month daughter, but she is still very high needs and I would LOVE to hear from any veterans. Like "Chris" I lost your email address!!!! My computer bombed and I lost your address.
This forum used to be soooo busy, seems as if it has slowed down alot. Which is probably a good thing!
I would love to give advise t anyone who is in the midst of this and at their wits end! Because I know what it is like!
