My daughter has been on Zantac for four days and she never sleeps now. She still crys all day and night it seems, but now she never sleeps. Also, is it ok to dilute it with about 2oz of formula per 1ml? Any advice on this would be great. How long does it take to start working too?? Please Help I am at my wits end.

marybabs,

How about giving your baby the zantac throught the nipple of a bottle?? Than you can just add a bit of formula to it.
This way you can make sure all the Zantac is going to your baby.

Zantac can cause insomnia.
But you need to keep your baby on it for 2 weeks to see if it is working.

Hang in there!!

Thank you for responding to me. After I wait two weeks (sleepless weeks....;) ) Do you think she might have less insomnia then?? I also heard that Zantac can give children headaches as well??

my personal view is that zantac is hopeless and its got too many side effects with little results. with both my children i tried it and discarded it. prilosec works far better and in no time you will find a contented child who actually sleeps pain free (well hopefully). you might want to go back to your doctor and see if you can try that instead - many of the people on this board have had great success with it. theres nothing worse than a child not sleeping and in pain. good luck.

Here is some info:

~REGLAN is a motility drug. It speeds up digestion. IMO you need a gi to play around w/all these meds. Reglan has some serious neurological side effects. Ds was on it for a while. http://www.healthsquare.com/newrx/reg1369.htm

~ZANTAC reduces the acid - http://www.gsk.com/products/zantac_us.htm
~PEPCID is another acid reducing drug
http://health.yahoo.com/health/drugs/pep1325/0.html

~PREVACID blocks acid productions "Prevacid reduces acid by blocking your stomach's acid-producing mechanism. Even though this mechanism is constantly being renewed, and producing new acid, taking Prevacid actually reduces your stomach acid for up to 24 hours" http://www.prevacid.com/about/works/
PRILOSEC is also like prevacid http://www.priloseconline.com/prilosec/inhibitors.htm

some children need say zantac and reglan or pepcid and reglan. Some are just on zantac. some are just on prevacid. Some are just on prilosec or may need reglan and prilosec. Doctors prescribe the meds according to severity or reflux most of the time.

It will take at least 2 wks to see how the zantac is working. This med needs to be adjusted w/wt gain. You will have reflux flares w/every tooth, shot, illness, stress etc...Starting solids can make reflux worse in some too. I'm not saying this will happen to your baby but just letting you know it can. It doesn't mean the med isn't working BUT you may need some mylanta to get you through those days of the flare. Now if the flare last more than a wk or 2 you may need a med adjustment. If that still doesn't work then you may need to go to the next step of prevacid or prilosec.

I believe that Zantac had less side affects...than the other meds out there.
But Zantac is not for everyone.
