Last week we had to take her to the ER because she was screaming so bad and frantic for 6 hours. I cried too because it has been so hard and we had no idea what was wrong. In the ER they checked her over and over and found nothing. They had us follow-up the next day with the ped. The ped also found nothing and we all thought it was Elise's reflux getting worse again (Elise gained NO weight in the last 1.5-2 weeks since her 4 month appt!!!)so they set us up to see a GI Specialist. Our appt is for 9/12/03 (Friday) and an upper GI test on 9/24/03. I have been researching ever think I can think of for weeks trying to figure out what is wrong. We have been grasping at straws desperately! Well this weekend I realized that I am not producing but 2-3 oz of milk per feeding. I found this out because I was pumping while Elise stayed the night at Grammy's. This is not enough as she drinks 5-6 oz of ebm per feeding at Grammy's house. I had worried that I was not producing enough but people told me don't worry your body will make enough milk for her just keep breastfeeding. Now, I am breastfeeding her from both breasts first then when she starts to get mad because nothing is coming out I feed her 4 oz of Alimentum formula. We started this yesterday and so far things have improved greatly!! Still not positive this is all that is wrong but it seems to be a good start. I am not really sure why I am not producing enough milk though because I am breastfeeding her every 3 hours still. I feel like I have failed her as her mother and have failed at breastfeeding (the one thing I thought I was doing right!). I had no idea I was starving my baby!! We are going to keep our appt with the specialist because I know she is still refluxing. Please cross your fingers for us that this continues to work. Thanks!

NuMom,
Here are some big hugs for you. ((((HUGS)))
Please keep us updated on what they find.

I was thinking...could Elise be lactose intolerant???
Or maybe she is still hungry or has painful gas.

Some women just dont produce enough milk....Its not your fault!!
I tried bf'ing and well that only worked for 2 weeks..she is lactose intorerant.
And at that time had colic and reflux. So Hope screamed all the time.

I hope that someone here can help you out.
All I can do is offer you prayers...

~Rachel

You're story sounds just like mine. Ryan was born 4/18 and after showing improvements during August, the last 3 weeks have been terrible. We also finally got in to see a GI last Friday and he spit up profusely the entire time we were there. They increased his prescription of Prevacid from the 7.5mg he was prescribed by his ped to 30mg per day. So far I can't say it has helped. He spits up even more now that he can pull himself up to a sitting up position in his swing or bouncy seat. Apparently that just squeezes his stomach and up it comes.

Ryan is on hypoallergenic formula as I too had difficulty producing milk. It helps but only slightly.

He sleeps well 11-12 hours at night with only one feeding during the night, but he wimpers and cries almost all day with a few 20-30 min naps. We are both exhausted by the end of the day. He is suffering much worse than my daughter who by 5 months had improved greatly.

Good luck to you!
