My daughter is now 2 months and has been diagnosed with Reflux (along with Colic......if the reflux weren't enough!)at 3 weeks of age. She just started taking Prilosec (5 ml / 1x daily in the morning) three days ago. Prior to starting the Prilosec she was taking Pepcid AC (10mg/2x's daily), which was prescribed by our Pediatrician. The Pepcid seemed to work "OK" but she was far from better so our doctor refered us to a GI Specialist, who thus prescribed the Prilosec. My question is, does anyone have any experience with this or an idea on a average time to take effect?? The doctor said it can vary from 3-10 days. Tonight she had a difficult time with the reflux and we are PRAYING this is the right medication and that it doesn't take a long time to work.

I have no experience with Prilosec in particular but my daughter, Nicole (now 5 mo), also had colic and reflux. They put her on Zantac which within a week I noticed had helped slightly. However, she had such a bad tummy that we also switched her formula to Alimentum (for colic and protein allergies -- easier to digest). The Alimentum and Zantac combination has seemed to do the trick. We had to increase her dose from 1 ml 3 x a day to 1.25 ml 3 x a day after about a month.

Also, we recently transitioned her off the Alimentum to Similac Lactose free and I noticed that her reflux got a little worse at that moment too so we again increased it to 1.5 ml 3 x a day. Now, she is doing rather well except that she is teething and not handling that pain well.

Give the Prilosec a little time. Also, consider another formula to help with the colic. Like I said, Alimentum is super easy to digest which in turn helps to cut down on excess stomach acid, easing the discomfort of the reflux.

Thanks Lisa,
Our daughter is on Alimentum which has helped with her gas issues, but not so much the reflux. Just out of curiousity how do you get your daughter to take the zantac. We had a heck of a time when our daughter was on zantac.

Good luck with the teething. That is yet to come for us.

Hi there,
My daughter is now 9 months and has been on Prilosec since about three months. She was originally on Zantac and Reglan but we had no luck and in some ways those meds made things worse. The Prilosec took about 2 days to kick in and she wasn't "sympton free" for about a month but we noticed a huge difference fairly quickly. She still is taking it and we hope to be able to wean her from it soon. She also had colic until about 5 months but we made it and now she is a happy, smiley little gal--thank goodness!!!
Hope things get better for you soon!
